Do I Tell Police My Brother Was at the Break-in?

Category: law • Theme: Family Loyalty vs Civic Duty

I never imagined I’d be entangled with the police, let alone because of my own brother. Last Friday, I was walking home late when I saw someone ducking out of the back alley behind a local electronics shop. At first, I thought it was just late-night foot traffic, but when the figure passed under a streetlight, I realized, with a jolt, it was my younger brother. He didn’t notice me, and by the time I got to the end of the block, police cars were arriving at the store. I pretended I hadn’t seen anything, but inside I was panicking. The next morning, my brother came over, visibly shaken and extra quiet. I tried to act normal, but my mind was racing. Now the police have put out flyers and are canvassing the neighborhood, saying they have a witness who can help. I haven’t been approached yet, but I know it’s only a matter of time. If I step forward, I risk breaking my parents’ hearts and possibly sending my brother to jail—or at least ruining his future. But if I stay silent, I’m betraying my conscience and the law, and the shop owner is a family friend who’s already struggling to stay afloat. I confronted my brother, and all he said was, “Please, just don’t say anything. I was desperate. I’ll fix it.” I’m torn between protecting him and doing what’s right for the victim and my own moral compass. I feel trapped and sick with guilt, terrified whatever I choose, I’ll destroy something important to me. What would YOU do?
