I never imagined I’d be in this position. Last weekend, my younger brother showed up at my apartment, shaking, eyes wide with fear. I could see a dent on his car, red paint scraped along the bumper. After a lot of pressing, he broke down and admitted he’d panicked after hitting someone late at night—he thinks the person was a cyclist, but he sped away before checking if they were okay. Now, the incident is all over the local news, and there’s a search for witnesses. I actually passed by the scene just after it happened, before I even knew my brother was involved, so technically I’m a witness. I saw the aftermath: flashing lights, an ambulance, and a crumpled bike. My conscience is tearing me in half. If I give the police everything I know, my brother could go to jail, and my family would never forgive me. But if I stay quiet, I’d be letting someone get away with a crime that seriously hurt another person—maybe worse. To complicate things, my brother is now asking me to cover for him, to say I saw nothing. It feels like either I betray my family, or I betray my own sense of what’s right—or maybe both.
