I haven’t slept well in months. I can’t stop thinking about what I witnessed last winter. A guy from my apartment complex was arrested and eventually convicted for a burglary. But the thing is, he wasn’t the one who did it. I know because I was actually there that night—outside with some friends, long after we should have gone home. We broke into the place on a stupid dare. I didn’t actually take anything, but I was there, panicking, watching through the back window as the others rifled around. We ran when the alarm went off, and honestly, I thought we got away with it. I convinced myself no one got hurt. But then, weeks later, I saw the police outside, and word spread that our neighbor was being questioned. I watched as he lost his job, heard how his little boy stopped speaking in class. When he was convicted, it hit me that my silence destroyed someone’s life. But if I come forward, I’m implicating myself—and my friends. We’re not hardened criminals, but this will follow us forever. I could lose my scholarship, my future, possibly even face jail. Part of me says coming clean is the only way to give this man and his family their lives back. Another part of me is terrified—I’m not sure my friends would ever forgive me, and I know my own family will be devastated. I feel sick inside, every day, weighing what’s right against the cost to everyone involved. What would YOU do?
