I was out with some friends about a year ago, and we got into some trouble—nothing violent, just a stupid night where things spun out of control. Later that week, news came out that someone was arrested for a crime that actually happened near where we were. At the time, my friends and I genuinely thought we had nothing to do with it. But a few weeks back, I found out from one of those friends that the innocent guy they arrested was mistaken for one of us, mostly because of a detail I accidentally left behind. I dug into the case and realized this man is now serving time for something he didn’t do. He even has a son—same age as my little brother. If I come forward and tell the truth, I know I’ll be charged. Even though the crime was mostly property damage, my involvement could still mean jail time, not to mention destroying my reputation and with it, my chance at law school. My parents have always been proud of how far I’ve come, especially since they struggled so much to give me a better start. They’d be devastated, and I’d likely lose several friendships. But when I look at news reports about this man and his family, I feel sick. I can’t imagine being separated from my own family for something I didn’t do. Part of me wants to go to the police, but I worry about what it would mean for everyone else dragged along with me—not just me, but my friends, our families. Another part of me thinks maybe there’s a way to help without confessing everything—maybe I could tip off a lawyer anonymously, but then the risk is still there if it leads back to me. Or I could stay silent and just try to move forward, but I don’t know if I’ll ever forgive myself if I do. What would YOU do?
