I can rarely sleep through the night since the trial ended. Someone I once considered a distant acquaintance—just a guy from my old neighborhood—got convicted of armed robbery. The evidence was a mess, and when I watched the news, my stomach twisted, because I knew he didn’t do it. The real problem is, if I told anyone what I know, they would immediately look into how I knew so much detail about what actually happened. Why? Because I was nearby the night of the robbery, doing something illegal myself—trespassing, actually, on a closed construction site, just because I was dared by friends on a stupid night out. I saw two strangers running from the scene, not the guy who got convicted, but if I speak up, the investigation will trace my location, and I’ll be implicated in a different crime. Every time I think about him, locked up for something he didn’t do, I feel this crushing guilt. He has two kids. His life’s changed forever.
