I’ve been living with this gnawing sense of dread for almost a year now. Last winter, I was part of a group of friends who got caught up in something stupid—we broke into a store after hours as a prank, not realizing how serious it would get. Things spiraled, and when the police came asking questions, I panicked. Another guy from town, who barely knew us, got picked up mostly because he fit the basic description and had a record. My friends and I kept quiet—if we came forward, we would have all faced felony charges. The police never really bothered to dig deeper, and I told myself it would sort itself out. But it didn’t. He was found guilty and got sent to prison. Every time I see his family at the market or church, I feel sick. I go over the trial in my head, and the fact that he’s suffering because I stayed silent makes me want to crawl out of my skin. At the same time, if I admit what really happened, not only do I risk jail, but I could destroy my own family’s future—my mom has health problems, and my siblings count on me for support. I keep hoping someone else will fix it, or that new evidence will come out, but nothing has changed. The man’s life is being wasted behind bars for something I did. My anxiety is eating me alive, and I honestly don’t know if I can live with myself. What would YOU do?
