I never expected to be put in a position like this, but here I am, unable to sleep for nights on end. My younger brother and I have always been close, even as adults with our own lives. Earlier this month, I stopped by his apartment unannounced to drop off some tools he’d borrowed. When I knocked, he looked startled—almost panicked—but let me in. I ended up seeing him hiding a bag full of electronics, brand new and still sealed, in the back of his closet. He swore me to secrecy, saying he got them for ‘cheap’—but something felt off. Days later, I saw a local news report about a string of break-ins at a tech store in the neighborhood. They showed surveillance images, and I recognized my brother’s jacket and shoes immediately. In a daze, I confronted him. He broke down and confessed: he’d made some huge gambling mistakes, owed money, and didn’t know how else to get out. He begged me not to say anything, promising he’d fix it and return what he could. Now, I’m completely torn. If I go to the police, my brother’s life—maybe even our whole family—will implode. But if I stay silent, I’m hiding a crime and living with the guilt, while innocent people are out thousands of dollars. My brother isn’t a bad person, but what he did was wrong. I keep replaying the news clip, his shaking hands, the way our mom always said we should look out for one another. I feel sick with worry, scared for him, but also powerless to make any decision that won’t leave me regretting it forever. What would YOU do?
