I’ve been living in the same small apartment for three years. The rent is barely affordable, and despite its flaws—mold spots, a leaky bathroom, unreliable heat—it’s the only place I can manage while finishing grad school. Last week, a city inspector visited, apparently tipped off about code violations in the building. My landlord texted all tenants to keep quiet, and I did. But the next day, I overheard him bragging to his brother in the stairwell about forging maintenance records and bribing a friend to sign off on 'repairs' that never happened. I found the fake record—my signature copied at the bottom. Since then, guilt and fear have been eating at me. I know what he’s doing is illegal and could put tenants at risk, especially families here with kids. But if I report him, I might lose my housing. I’ve seen him evict people for less, sometimes finding obscure lease violations as an excuse. Moving isn’t financially possible for me right now, and I have nowhere else to go. I worry that exposing him could also hurt other tenants who can’t easily relocate. On the other hand, staying silent feels like I’m enabling him, possibly putting people in danger, especially if some disaster happens due to ignored repairs. Every time I see the mold creeping back or hear the pipes groaning, I get angrier—but also more scared. What would YOU do?
