I’ve lived in my tiny apartment for three years, barely making rent each month. My landlord has always been standoffish, but I try to stay on his good side because there aren’t many affordable places around here. Last week, when the fire department came to do random safety checks, I accidentally overheard my landlord on the phone, telling someone he ‘took care of the paperwork’ and mocking how the units were actually overdue for real inspections. The next day, I snooped near the mailbox and saw several unsigned government forms just stuffed in a folder. I realized he’s been faking the building’s safety certifications, and nothing’s actually checked. I’m scared—my unit has old wiring, and the hallway extinguisher looks like it hasn’t been touched in years. I want to report this, because if there’s ever a fire, we could all be in danger. But I’m also terrified: I have no savings, my rent is slightly below market, and if he suspects I’m the whistleblower, he could easily find a way to evict me or raise my rent.
