I recently found out something about my landlord that I can’t shake off. I rent a small basement studio in a city where affordable housing is almost impossible to find. The building has always seemed a bit off—there are too many tenants, and I’ve noticed sketchy construction, like makeshift walls and odd wiring. A few days ago, a new neighbor moved in and accidentally told me that our units aren’t legally registered. Out of curiosity (and worry), I did some digging. My worst fear was confirmed: our landlord has been renting out multiple illegal apartments. I even found out that this violates fire codes and basic safety laws, not to mention city housing regulations. The weight of this discovery is crushing me. On one hand, it feels wrong to stay silent when people—myself included—could be at risk if there was a fire or crisis. But if I report him, it’s highly likely the city will shut down the illegal units. I could be evicted, along with others who also can’t afford to live elsewhere. Some of my neighbors are families or elderly folks who’ve lived here for years. Yet every day, I worry something terrible could happen. I see loose wires, blocked exits, and I feel guilty knowing about all this and doing nothing. Still, the fear of losing the only home I can afford makes me second-guess everything. I feel stuck, scared to act, but haunted by what might happen if I don’t. What would YOU do?
