I recently discovered that my landlord has been illegally subletting apartments in our building, including mine, without the property owner's knowledge. It happened last week when I got mail addressed to someone I'd never heard of, and a worried neighbor confided in me about being threatened with eviction if she complained. I only ended up renting because it was affordable, and this place has become my safe haven after a rough year. Learning this, I dug a bit deeper and realized several tenants, myself included, could lose our homes or even face legal trouble. At the same time, the building has issues: ongoing leaks, lack of heating, and the landlord avoids requests and always wants rent in cash. Part of me wants to blow the whistle—I know what he's doing is wrong, and some neighbors are truly suffering. But if I report him, there's a good chance we'll all be evicted, and right now, I can't afford to move anywhere else. I’m terrified of ending up homeless or stuck in a worse situation. Yet, staying silent means helping him get away with it, and the problems around here will never improve. I’ve heard stories about authorities helping tenants in cases like this, but I don’t know if that would really protect me. I feel incredibly trapped, scared, and unsure what’s right.
