I’ve lived in this old apartment for nearly five years, and in my city, affordable housing is vanishing fast. Last month, I started noticing strangers rolling suitcases down the hall, and it turned out my landlord has been quietly running several illegal Airbnb units out of our building, violating city laws and his mortgage agreement. In fact, my own lease doesn’t technically allow subletting, but I’m a legal tenant. I know some of my neighbors are only here for a few days before new faces take their place. It's disruptive, but more than that, I’m worried about safety and the rise in property crime around us. I’ve heard city inspectors have started cracking down, and if someone reported it, my landlord could face huge fines and maybe even evictions. It’s clear what’s happening is wrong—taking affordable apartments off the market, skirted safety rules, turning our home into a revolving door. But if I come forward, my landlord could retaliate, maybe refuse to renew my lease or find a loophole to kick me out. With rents skyrocketing everywhere, I honestly don’t know if I’d find another place I could afford. At the same time, looking the other way feels like I’m enabling the problem—my city is struggling for housing, and I’m just one of many caught in it.
