I never thought I’d be in this position. A few years back, I was called as a witness after a robbery at a small convenience store where I used to hang out. The police suspected a guy who fit the description, and under pressure, I told them he was there that night. I was scared—mainly because I was there too, doing something illegal myself. I never actually saw him commit the crime, but I said enough to convince the jury. Now he’s serving time for something I don’t think he did, but if I step forward to clear his name, I risk implicating myself in the whole mess: perjury, obstruction, even the petty crime I was afraid to admit. Every day I feel the guilt eating at me. Part of me wants to believe the courts got it right, but deep down I know I was just trying to save myself. I keep seeing his mother crying outside the courthouse, and I wonder if I can live with this on my conscience forever. But I have a lot to lose—my job, my relationship, maybe my freedom—if I admit the truth. Is it too late to undo what I did? Or is coming clean just going to ruin two lives instead of one?
