My Testimony Put the Wrong Man in Prison—Do I Confess Now?

Category: law • Theme: Justice for the Innocent vs Protecting Myself

I can barely sleep lately. A few years ago, I was pressured into testifying in a case where someone was accused of theft at my old workplace. I was barely scraping by then, terrified of jeopardizing my own situation, and the investigator implied I could be seen as an accomplice if I stayed quiet. So I gave a statement that pointed to the person they already suspected. I didn’t outright lie, but I left out things that would have cleared him, and emphasized details that made him look guilty. He was convicted and sent to prison. Last week, I found out he’s up for a parole review, but just got denied again because of the “strong testimony” against him—mine. He has a teenage daughter asking online for help to prove his innocence. My stomach turns every time I look at her profile. I know he didn’t do it. The truth is, if I speak up now, I risk perjury or even being charged myself. My career, my family, everything I’ve rebuilt since then—it could fall apart overnight. I’ve never told anyone, not even my partner. But every day I keep quiet, an innocent man spends another day locked away because of me. I don’t know how I live with myself either way. What would YOU do?
