I recently found out my landlord has been renting my apartment to me with a fake lease. I discovered it by accident when a city inspector left a note about building permits, and I started digging online. It turns out my landlord has actually converted three units in the building, including mine, without any proper authorization. He charges less rent than the market rate, but none of us have any legal tenant protections. If I report him, he could face serious fines—and I’d definitely lose my home, because I’d have no lease on record. But I also know that what he’s doing is illegal, and the building isn’t always safe—the fire alarms sometimes malfunction, and there’s no clear emergency exit. Part of me feels responsible for the other tenants too, especially since a family with kids lives downstairs. At the same time, I can’t afford anything else in the city right now. I’ve looked. If I get evicted, I’m genuinely not sure where I’ll go, and I have no savings to fall back on after some recent health issues. My landlord has always been friendly to me and even helped when my heating broke in the winter, although now I realize he didn’t call an official repair company either.
