I just found out that the gas safety certificate my landlord gave me is fake. I only realized because a neighbor, who’s a gas technician, commented on the serial number when he popped in to help light my oven. After double-checking online, I learned the certificate isn’t valid at all. My landlord is pretty relaxed about repairs and likes to do things under the table, but I honestly didn’t expect this. Legal websites say I should report him, but if I do, there’s a good chance I’ll be evicted—he’s hinted before that he doesn’t want ‘troublemakers.’ The rent is affordable, and in my city, it’s almost impossible to find another place I can afford. Plus, I’m genuinely scared of confrontation and don’t have family close by. At the same time, I feel uneasy every time I use the gas. I keep picturing stories about silent leaks and house fires. If I look the other way, I stay safely housed, but is it selfish to ignore not just the law, but my own safety? Should I risk calling the authorities, knowing it might not just mean losing my home, but also making things unfriendly for the other tenants? Some people in my building have kids.
