I never imagined a quick trip to my brother’s apartment would leave me caught between my family and the law. Last week, I stopped by to pick up a book he borrowed, and as I walked up the hallway, I saw him hurriedly loading something heavy—what looked like electronics—into his car. Later that afternoon, I found out from the news that there had been a break-in at his neighbor’s apartment, and expensive items had been stolen. I recognized some of the things I saw in his trunk from the news footage. My brother hasn’t said a word to me about it, but ever since that day, he seems nervous whenever I’m around. Two days ago, a detective came to my door asking if I’d seen anything unusual near my brother’s place that morning. I panicked and told him I hadn’t seen anything. Now, they’ve asked me to come to the station; they say I might have information that can help the case. I feel sick at the thought of betraying my brother, knowing it could ruin his life. But I also can’t shake the fear and guilt—what if my silence means someone innocent is blamed, or my brother keeps making worse choices? I keep replaying the moment in my mind, wishing I hadn’t seen anything. If I testify, there’s a real chance my brother could go to prison. If I protect him, I’m lying to law enforcement and risking my own future. If I stay vague or try to avoid getting too involved, I’m not sure anything will really be solved. I’m completely torn. What would YOU do?
