I’m still shaking. Yesterday, I stopped by the grocery store across town—a place I never go—because I needed to pick up some things after work. As I was walking to my car in the parking lot, I saw my younger brother come out of the store. I almost called out, but before I could, I noticed he kept glancing back nervously. Then, I saw him meet a guy by a delivery door, hand over a heavy-looking duffel bag, and receive cash. It didn’t look right. Later that night, a news alert said there’d been a robbery at that same store, and apparently, several thousand dollars were taken. The description matched what I’d seen—down to the duffel bag and the guy’s jacket. My brother has gotten into trouble before, but nothing like this. I asked him how his day was, and he acted completely normal. I’m eating dinner with our parents tonight, and he’ll be there, the same as always. I don’t even know if the police have any real leads yet, but if I told them what I saw, I could end up destroying his life—and probably tearing my family apart. At the same time, I keep thinking of the store manager I saw crying on TV, worried about her job. It makes me feel physically sick. I love my brother, but what if he keeps making worse choices? If I stay quiet, am I helping him, or letting him get away with something terrible? If I speak up, I might lose him forever—or be the reason he finally changes.
