I never imagined I’d be facing something like this with my own family. My uncle, who’s always been the loudest voice at holidays, started posting nonstop about a conspiracy theory that’s been making headlines lately. He shares ‘articles’ and memes that I know are not just wrong, but honestly dangerous — about vaccines changing your DNA, politicians being secretly replaced, and other things that could lead to real harm. Some of his friends (and even younger cousins) are reposting it all. I tried talking to him privately, gently suggesting he check sources, but he laughed it off and accused me of being ‘brainwashed’. Now I see strangers arguing on his page, and a few people thanking him for ‘opening their eyes’. A local parent even messaged me, worried because their teen follows my uncle. Part of me wants to call him out publicly, post factual corrections, and maybe even report his posts. But I’m terrified of tearing apart family ties, especially since my uncle helped me when I was at my lowest a few years ago. My parents are urging me to drop it, saying ‘it’s not worth the war’. But is looking away making me complicit? Or am I overestimating the harm? I keep replaying his voice in my head, and picturing the look on his face if I publicly confront him. What would YOU do?
