Do I Expose My Uncle’s Misinformation Even If It Shames My Family?

Category: politics • Theme: Family Loyalty vs Public Responsibility

I recently found out my uncle—who has always been like a second dad to me—is spreading conspiracy theories and outright false medical advice on his social media. He has a pretty big following in our small town, and some of my old classmates have shared his posts. The things he says are dangerous—he’s telling people not to vaccinate their kids, that certain public health emergencies are hoaxes, and even suggested a local politician faked an illness. A few weeks ago, my friend’s mom used my uncle’s 'advice' and ended up in the hospital. I felt sick when I found out. I’ve tried talking to my uncle privately, but he just dismisses my concerns, accusing me of being 'brainwashed by the media.' My parents ask me not to make trouble, reminding me how family bonds matter in our culture. I’m honestly torn. Part of me wants to publicly call him out in the comments or even report his account, hoping it’ll stop him from harming people. But if I do, it’ll create a massive rift in our already fragile family—the last time someone criticized him, he cut them off for years. On the other hand, if I stay silent or just keep pressing him gently in private, nothing changes, and more people could get hurt by his reckless claims. I feel caught between protecting my community from harm and not wanting to destroy my relationship with someone I love. Every option seems to come with a huge cost, and I’m terrified of making things worse for everyone. What would YOU do?
