My Brother’s Conspiracy Posts Are Going Viral—Should I Intervene?

Category: politics • Theme: Family Bonds vs Civic Responsibility

I never thought I’d be in this position. My older brother and I have always been close, but since the last election, something shifted between us. He started posting these long rants online, claiming all sorts of wild things—ranging from election fraud to bizarre health conspiracies. At first, I just scrolled past out of embarrassment and hoped it would fade away. But then I noticed his posts were getting shared, not just by strangers but by mutual family members, a few of whom are quite vulnerable or easily influenced. Even my teenage niece came to me asking if some of it was true. The misinformation he’s spreading isn’t just harmless nonsense—some of it is genuinely dangerous, telling people to avoid life-saving treatments or stirring up hatred. I feel torn in every direction. Part of me wants to unfollow him and just keep the peace for the sake of family. But I also know that leaving this unchecked could make things worse, maybe even lead to real-world harm. At the same time, I worry that confronting him directly could push him away forever or cause a huge rift in our already struggling family. It keeps me up at night. I love my brother, but I’m afraid of what he might do—or inspire others to do—if no one steps in. Would publicly disputing him make him double down, or would he feel betrayed and cut me off? Am I responsible for keeping family harmony at the expense of the broader harm his words might cause? Or is it enough to talk to him privately and risk being shut out? I feel like no matter what I do, I’m choosing between my relationship with him and what feels right for everyone else. What would YOU do?
