My Brother's Viral Post Could Spark Real Harm—Do I Step In?

Category: politics • Theme: Family Loyalty vs Social Responsibility

I never thought I’d be in this position, but my younger brother posted something on his social media that went viral for all the wrong reasons. He shared a long rant about an upcoming election, full of wild claims about how the voting machines will be hacked and urging people not to trust any results unless 'his' candidate wins. I know for a fact these claims aren’t true. I work in a field tangentially related to IT security, and I’ve actually seen the painstaking protocols in place. But it’s not just about facts — what scares me most is seeing the hundreds of comments and shares, people agreeing, calling for protests, some even talking about 'taking action.' I love my brother, and I know he sees himself as some kind of truth-teller. Confrontation is not our family’s strong suit; growing up, speaking out only led to ugly blow-ups. I already worry we’re growing apart because of politics, but seeing his influence scares me. Part of me wants to ignore it and hope it blows over, but another part worries someone might get hurt because of this misinformation snowballing. If I call him out publicly, I risk destroying what's left of our relationship — and maybe putting a target on my back from his supporters. If I just message him privately, I don’t know if it’ll even make a dent. Or maybe I should simply report the post anonymously and avoid any personal fallout, though he might suspect. I hate feeling complicit, but I hate the thought of pushing him away forever, too. What would YOU do?
