I never thought I'd find myself here, but lately, my dad has been posting some extremely misleading and even aggressive political content on his social media. He shares conspiracy theories and inflammatory memes almost daily. What really scares me is that some of these posts seem targeted at marginalized groups—groups my friends belong to. We live in a small community where everyone knows each other, and lately, a few of my friends have confided in me about feeling hurt and even unsafe because of the things my dad shares. Every time I see one of his rants pop up, I feel a knot in my stomach. He’s never been violent or openly hateful in person, but online he is someone I barely recognize. I’ve tried ignoring it or scrolling past, but it’s starting to feel like my silence makes me complicit. At the same time, I know confronting him could cause a huge rift. My dad is stubborn, proud, and seeing his own daughter call him out publicly might push him even deeper into his beliefs, or destroy our relationship altogether. Privately messaging him could be less damaging, but I worry he’ll feel betrayed. If I stay silent, my friends might think I don’t care about their feelings—or worse, that I agree with him. I feel trapped between loyalty to my family and my commitment to stand up for what’s right. What would YOU do?
