I’ve never followed politics until a few years ago, when a local candidate inspired me. They seemed different—honest, progressive, someone who listened. I volunteered for their campaign, encouraged family and friends to vote, and even went door to door. For the first time in my life, I felt like I was truly doing something that mattered. But last week, I accidentally came across a string of emails from their office (I’m close with one of their staff), and what I read left me shaken. There are details about accepting donations from companies they publicly condemned, nods to influencing contracts, and even a plan to hide this from supporters. I tried convincing myself there might be an explanation, but the evidence is too clear. I feel physically sick—this isn’t just a random politician to me. I built my identity around their cause, convinced others to trust them, and I still personally know people who work for them. Every day, people at the campaign office are excited about the next election and talk about making real change. I want to believe, but I can’t shake the guilt. If I say something, it could destroy not just a person’s career, but hope for so many people—maybe even endanger my friends’ jobs. But if I stay quiet, I’m complicit in exactly what I tried to fight against. I have no idea who I’m supposed to be loyal to: the people I love, or the principles we all claimed to believe in. I barely sleep anymore, and I can’t look at my campaign friends the same way. What would YOU do?
