I’ve donated to my favorite politician’s campaign, volunteered my weekends, and spent years defending their reputation online and to friends. I genuinely believed they stood for honesty and real change, which matters a lot in my city where everyone’s so cynical about politics. Last week, while helping process documents for the campaign, I accidentally came across an email thread that clearly showed they diverted charity funds to boost their own media image. I re-read it a dozen times, hoping I was misunderstanding. But the evidence is there — they lied, covered it up, and other people seem involved. Since then, I can’t eat or sleep right. It feels like my whole identity is tied up in supporting their cause. Most of my closest friends are campaign volunteers too, and outing this would blow up our group — not to mention possibly turning the next election. But covering it up makes me feel sick. Every instinct says I should do something, but I also know what kind of hate and fallout whistleblowers get. Should I turn them in and risk everything I’ve worked for, or keep quiet for the “greater good”? Or is there a way to navigate this without devastating everyone I care about? What would YOU do?
