I never thought I’d be here, caught between my love for my mom and my own values. Two years ago, my mother retired and, to keep busy, got deep into social media. Lately, I’ve noticed the things she shares have gotten darker: unproven rumors about local political candidates, wild conspiracy theories, and, most painfully, posts that target minority communities in our area. The posts attract hundreds of shares and likes—her network is big. When I brought it up gently, she insisted it was all true and accused me of falling for 'mainstream lies.' I know she’s not a bad person, but what she’s spreading really could make people feel unsafe or even get someone hurt. Several friends have confronted me, asking how I can stay silent when it’s 'my own mom.' I’m torn. If I challenge her publicly, I risk burning our relationship and possibly turning her even more defensive. If I ignore it, I feel complicit—like I’m allowing this harm to continue. Trying to educate her in private hasn’t gotten through, either. Every day I see her posts, I feel a little sicker. But I still love her, and I don’t want to lose my mom over this. What would YOU do?
