I never imagined I’d be here, feeling torn between loyalty to my family and a sense of civic duty. My uncle has always been a bit of a character at family gatherings—loud, opinionated, and fiercely independent. Recently, though, his online presence has gone way beyond harmless rants. He’s started regularly posting conspiracy theories and outright falsehoods about elections and public health, and his followers have ballooned. Last night, I found out one of his posts (something really dangerous about rejecting a vital vaccine) was being shared in my local parent group—people quoting him as if he’s an expert. I’m afraid his words could actually harm people in our community. My cousins say to ignore it, that confronting him will mean total fallout—he takes criticism as betrayal. If I call him out publicly, it could embarrass him and tear our family apart right before the holidays. If I message him privately, I risk him shutting me out and doubling down. But if I do nothing, I feel complicit in the spread of information that could literally get people hurt. Every choice feels awful. I keep replaying conversations in my head, scared of what I’ll say—or not say—and the consequences either way. I love my family, but I can’t unsee the possible damage if everyone just stays silent. What would YOU do?
