I never thought I’d be the one to worry about what my family was posting online, but here I am. My uncle, who has always been a huge presence at family gatherings, started posting conspiracy theories and outright false information about public health on his social media. Lately, some of his posts have exploded—total strangers are sharing and commenting, and his account seems to be gaining followers every week. I’ve watched friends (and even distant relatives) quietly share or like some of his content, clearly swept up in the drama he stirs. Part of me knows his posts could be genuinely harmful—he’s made claims about vaccines that could put people at risk, and I’ve seen younger cousins quoting him. But the other side of me remembers how supportive he was after I lost my job last year, and how he always brings our favorite dessert to family dinners. If I confront him, I’m scared I’ll fracture our relationship or even cause a split in the family—he’s not the kind to take criticism well. If I ignore it, I feel complicit, like I’m letting misinformation spread without saying anything. I also worry that if I call him out publicly or report his posts, I’ll be seen as betraying my own family. I’ve tried dropping hints in private, but nothing changes. Now I’m not sure if I should escalate things—to be direct with him, to report his posts, or just let it go and avoid the drama. I feel trapped between protecting the truth and protecting my family. What would YOU do?
