Should I Call Out My Aunt’s Viral Election Lies?

Category: politics • Theme: Family Harmony vs Civic Responsibility

I never expected to be put in this position, but here I am, torn between my family and my conscience. My aunt has always been outspoken—at family dinners, she's the one who stirs up debates, sometimes just to get a reaction. Lately, though, it's much more serious. For the past few months, she’s been posting articles and memes on social media that wildly misrepresent this election: claims about rigged ballots, threats to certain groups, scary-sounding 'facts' that just aren’t true. Each post gets shared by dozens of her friends, and I’ve watched a few of our relatives start repeating her lines. The problem is, these aren’t harmless opinions—they’re stoking fear and anger, and a few older relatives I love are genuinely getting anxious, all based on these posts. I keep feeling this urge to step in, but every time I start drafting a comment or a private message, I freeze. My aunt was the one who watched me after school, who helped me when I first moved out. But she's doubling down online, shutting down anyone who tries to correct her. I’m worried if I confront her, it could turn ugly and create a rift in the family. On the other hand, if I just stay silent, this cycle will keep spiraling. Part of me wants to just quietly report her posts, but I hate the idea of going behind her back. I’m left wondering: is it my place to draw the line, or should I respect her choices, even when I disagree so deeply? What would YOU do?
