Should I Call Out My Mom’s Conspiracies Online?

Category: politics • Theme: Family Harmony vs Public Responsibility

I recently discovered my mom has been posting conspiracy theories on her social media—everything from false election narratives to dangerous health misinformation. She’s picking fights with strangers online and even some of my old friends have messaged me, concerned or angry about her posts. I tried talking with her calmly, but she gets incredibly defensive and accuses me of being 'brainwashed.' I hate seeing her get more isolated, but the stuff she's spreading could actually hurt people. It’s gotten to where some of my coworkers—even my boss—know about my mom’s accounts and awkwardly bring it up at work. I’m horrified every time she posts, but every part of me dreads the idea of blowing up our relationship by really confronting her, especially in public. At the same time, I don’t want to just ignore it—I worry about who might get hurt or what it says about my own values if I stay silent. I’m embarrassed, but also scared: if I challenge her publicly, she’ll see it as betrayal, maybe cut me off, and the fallout will ripple through my extended family. But if I keep tiptoeing around the issue, am I complicit? How do I balance love for my mom with responsibility to the wider world? What would YOU do?
