I never expected to see my uncle, who practically raised me for years, sharing obviously false political conspiracy theories on his popular Facebook page. He’s always been the fun uncle—brought me to my first protest, always encouraged me to think for myself. But lately, his posts are different: he's sharing videos blaming public health crises on shadowy groups, urging people to refuse life-saving treatment, and spreading wild election fraud claims. His posts are getting hundreds of shares, some even from people I know are immunocompromised or work in government. I’ve tried hinting at it in person, but he just laughs and says he’s "questioning the narrative." My aunt is worried about the family getting divided if I push harder. Some cousins—especially the younger ones—are starting to repeat his talking points. One even texted me a meme he shared, thinking it was hilarious. My mom begged me to just let it go; arguing would only make him dig in further and maybe destroy family gatherings. But every time I see someone comment, "Thanks, this opened my eyes," I feel so sick. I truly love him, but I keep thinking about friends who lose trust in basic facts because of viral posts like these. I know if I say something publicly, it could humiliate him and make us both targets for online harassment. The pressure is crushing me: Do I risk the family bond to confront him, step back and do nothing, or try to find a way to quietly nudge him in a better direction? What would YOU do?
