I always loved my uncle. Growing up, he was the one who taught me to ride a bike, who picked out just the right books for my birthdays, who always had a wisecrack at family dinners. But over the last few years, something has changed. He’s been posting increasingly radical political ideas on social media—conspiracy theories about elections, public health, even wild claims about local politicians. He shares articles from sketchy websites, and his comments section fills up with heated arguments. Some of what he says is just embarrassing, but some of it is dangerous. I worry most because he’s influential. Friends and family respect him, and I’ve already seen cousins and neighbors echoing his posts, sometimes getting into fights with others online. My parents think I should just let it go—it’s not “my business,” and anyway, arguing on the internet never changes anyone’s mind. But I can’t stop thinking about the real-world consequences, about people making bad decisions or turning against each other thanks to false information. At the same time, I’m scared that confronting my uncle would wreck our relationship. He can be stubborn and sensitive to criticism, and honestly, I don’t want to be the reason for a family blow-up. I’m torn—do I step in and risk everything, or do I stay quiet and try to protect what’s left of our family peace? What would YOU do?
