Should I Challenge My Dad’s Dangerous Posts Online?

Category: politics • Theme: Family Loyalty vs Public Responsibility

I never thought I’d be in this position, but here I am. My dad has always been opinionated—growing up, it was usually just harmless debates around the dinner table. But lately, he’s started posting things on social media that go way beyond politics. Conspiracy theories, medical misinformation, and some truly hateful rhetoric about certain groups. His posts get hundreds of shares—sometimes I even see them reposted by people in my own network. I’ve tried to hint that he should check his facts, but he laughs it off, saying everyone’s entitled to their opinion and that I’m just 'brainwashed by mainstream media.' Recently, he posted something that could actually endanger people’s health if they believe it. Part of me wants to publicly call him out or at least report the post, but I know how stubborn he is. If I confront him publicly, it could blow up—he might feel betrayed, and our relationship is already strained. On the other hand, ignoring it feels like letting him—and all those who read his posts—just keep spreading harm. There’s also a middle path: reach out to him privately, but I worry he’ll shut down or get defensive anyway. Every day, I watch the damage ripple outward, and I feel sick and powerless. I love my dad, but I’m afraid of letting this continue. What would YOU do?
