Should I Confront My Dad About His Viral Misinformation?

Category: politics • Theme: Family Loyalty vs Civic Responsibility

I grew up respecting my dad — he's always been opinionated, but he taught me to care about our country and speak up for what I believe. But lately, things have changed. During the last two years, he’s become obsessed with politics, spending hours every night on social media. At first, I thought it was just another hobby, but now it's more than that — he’s sharing wild conspiracy theories and outright false claims. Last week, one of his posts about a public health crisis went viral in our town’s Facebook group. People are actually quoting him and making worse choices because of it. I feel sick watching neighbors repost his stuff. I tried casually bringing up facts, but he brushed me off and said I was 'brainwashed by the media.' My mom thinks it’s a phase and begs me not to cause drama. I can already feel the rift growing: we argue every time I visit, and my younger siblings are starting to parrot his talking points. Part of me wants to call him out publicly to set the record straight, but I know it will humiliate him and probably shatter our relationship. On the flip side, if I stay silent, I’m letting dangerous lies spread, possibly putting people in real harm. I wonder if there’s a gentle middle path — but every day I wait, the posts pile up. I feel trapped between betraying my family and betraying my values. What would YOU do?
