I’ve always loved my dad for his big heart, corny jokes, and the way he can fix anything from squeaky doors to broken spirits. But over the last year, we’ve drifted, mostly because he’s got so wrapped up in online politics. Last week, I stumbled onto his public Facebook feed, and my stomach dropped—he’s sharing wild conspiracy posts about vaccines tracking people, election fraud, and even things that border on hate speech. Some of his friends are egging him on; others—people I care about—are being harassed when they push back. I know none of this is true, but Dad is so deep into these “alternative facts” that I hardly recognize him online. The worst part? My little cousin, who looks up to Dad, has started repeating some of these claims at school and is being bullied for it. My aunt called me, upset, and I could hear in her voice that our family is splintering over this. I want to protect our family, and honestly, I feel a duty to do something—these lies aren’t harmless. But what if confronting Dad just pushes him further away or makes him dig in deeper? What if he feels humiliated, or worse, we never recover from the argument? Ignoring it feels wrong, but everything about speaking up seems dangerous and sad. I keep typing and deleting messages. Should I face him? Go public? Stay out? I’m terrified whatever I choose, our family might never be the same. What would YOU do?
