Should I Confront My Uncle About His Viral Conspiracy Posts?

Category: politics • Theme: Family Harmony vs Social Responsibility

I recently discovered that my uncle, who I've always looked up to, has been sharing a lot of extreme conspiracy theories about vaccines and elections on social media. Some of his posts have gone viral, and I see strangers fighting in the comments, but also some of our old family friends agreeing with him. It hurts because I know people who have been directly affected by these types of lies—one of my close friends lost a parent to COVID after refusing the vaccine, and I wonder if posts like my uncle's played a part. But my family is really close-knit, and my uncle has always been the life of family gatherings. I’m afraid if I call him out, even privately, it’ll create a rift that could split the family. My mother has already told me to just 'let him be'—that arguing only makes things worse, and nobody ever changes their mind online. But doing nothing feels cowardly, especially when some of his posts seem to make things worse in my own community. Lately, I’ve been losing sleep. I worry that if I speak up, he'll feel betrayed and shut himself off—not just from me, but from everyone. What if the next holiday is ruined, or my cousins stop inviting me over? But I also can't stand the idea of pretending not to see it, or supporting the spread of misinformation through silence. I'm caught between protecting family harmony and standing by what I believe is right. What would YOU do?
