I’m honestly torn and exhausted. My uncle, who I grew up looking up to, has recently become very active online—except all his posts are about politics, and most of it is just totally false. He’s sharing wildly inaccurate stuff about elections being rigged, vaccines being dangerous conspiracies, that kind of thing. He’s got quite a following now—several thousand people—including some friends of mine, and the stuff he posts is spreading quickly. Every time I see it, I feel sick inside, because I know how much harm misinformation like that can do—not just debates, but real-world violence and mistrust. But it’s also my uncle. My mom’s brother. He gave me tons of advice when I was younger, helped me figure out college, and we’ve always gotten along. My mom is already stressed out enough with family drama, and any confrontation would blow back on her too. At the same time, I’m scared that if I say nothing, I’m letting him help poison the information environment—and I genuinely worry someone will get hurt if this keeps up. I imagine talking to him, but I know he’ll get defensive and accuse me of censorship or “cancel culture.” I’m ashamed to admit it, but some part of me wants to just block him online and pretend I don’t know him. But that feels cowardly and cruel. Every option feels like a betrayal—of family, my own values, or maybe both. What would YOU do?
