I recently found out that my uncle, who's always been a bit outspoken, has been posting intensely misleading and even dangerous information about vaccines and elections on his social media accounts. At first, I brushed it off as just another relative ranting, but in the past few weeks, his posts have gotten more traction. People from his community are sharing them, and I've seen a few comments from strangers thanking him for "opening their eyes." It makes me sick to my stomach, honestly. The issue is, my uncle and I used to be pretty close. My mom's side of the family has always been tight-knit, and he’s the kind of person who hosts barbeques and buys all the kids fireworks every summer. But now, family group chats are either ignoring his posts or quietly discussing how worried some of us are about the things he's spreading. I want to talk to him, but I know from experience how defensive he can get. He already thinks "the younger generation" doesn't listen to him, and I'm terrified of starting a fight that splinters my family—especially since my mom begged me not to make things worse. At the same time, I feel awful letting blatant lies stand when I know some people are actually listening to him and might be putting themselves at risk. I've spent nights thinking about whether I should message him directly, call him out in the comments, or just stay silent and hope someone else steps up. Each option seems to come with a cost: family drama I can't undo, being the "nagging niece" no one listens to, or silently letting misinformation spread with my complicity. I truly don't know what to do anymore. What would YOU do?
