Should I Expose My Uncle’s Viral Conspiracy Postings?

Category: politics • Theme: Family Loyalty vs Public Responsibility

I’m at a total loss over what my uncle has been posting online the last year. He was always a bit contrarian, but recently he’s started spreading wild conspiracy theories about elections, vaccines, and climate change — stuff that gets a lot of traction, shares, and nasty comments. A few weeks ago, my cousin called me in tears, worried about the impact it’s having on the family’s reputation and even some younger relatives who look up to him. I’ve had friends message me privately, asking if I know he’s ‘gone off the rails.’ I feel sick every time I see a new post. Part of me wants to confront him directly and beg him to stop — but he’s always been so sensitive, and I know it could totally fracture the family (especially with his health issues lately and my aunt’s anxiety about family drama). Another part of me worries that if I don’t step in, innocent people could actually get hurt — or make dangerous choices because they trust him. I could also report his accounts, but that feels both sneaky and extreme, and could cause massive fallout if it ever came out that it was me. I lie awake at night, spinning scenarios in my head: ruin our family’s bond, let people get hurt, or try to find an in-between? I feel trapped between protecting the people I love, standing up for what’s right, and not becoming the villain myself. What would YOU do?
