I’ve always been heavily involved in my local politics, and for years, I truly believed in one progressive candidate—someone I felt finally represented people like me. I volunteered for their campaign, even knocking on doors during winter, and my friends and family have watched me defend this politician at every dinner and on every group chat. Last weekend, while helping at campaign HQ, I accidentally came across email attachments left open on a shared computer. They were unmistakably communication showing my candidate accepted money from a corporate lobbyist—something they have always publicly condemned. I double-checked, and there’s no doubt these emails are real. I feel sick. I want to believe it isn’t what it looks like, but the messages explicitly discuss donations in exchange for policy support. I feel personally betrayed, not just as a supporter, but as someone who convinced others to put their faith (and votes) in this person. But I also know what exposing this could do: it would ruin their career, demoralize thousands of people in my community, and almost certainly hand the seat to a candidate whose policies I despise. If I say nothing, am I complicit? But if I expose it, am I destroying years of work and worsening outcomes for the causes I care about? I’m paralyzed, hurt, and ashamed.
