I’ve never really been into politics, but a few years ago, one candidate totally changed that for me. Their speeches made me believe things could actually get better. I even volunteered on their campaign and convinced a bunch of family and friends to vote for them. A month ago, through my job, I accidentally came across documents that directly tie this politician to some pretty blatant bribery. It’s not indirect, not out of context — it’s very clear. My heart sank. Part of me desperately wants to believe it’s a setup, but I’ve checked the sources, and I just can’t see a way it isn’t real. I keep thinking about all the people I got excited about them, how much hope I placed in their promises, and what a difference their policies have made for people I care about. I also know that if this got out, not only would their career be over, but the opposition — who are even worse in my eyes — would likely take power. But at the same time, if I stay quiet, am I just as bad as the people who let corruption get swept under the rug, especially when I have solid proof? I’ve barely slept for weeks. Every time I see their face or hear their voice, I feel sick and also weirdly protective, like I want to shield them from the fallout. But I also feel this constant gnawing, like I’m betraying the truth and the people who trusted me. What would YOU do?
