I recently found out my uncle, who’s always been a bit of the family contrarian, is the main admin for several private group chats online where dangerous political misinformation spreads rapidly. I stumbled on this accidentally: I borrowed his tablet to help him with a banking app, and notifications kept popping up from chats with names like “Truth Defenders.” Out of curiosity, I peeked and saw posts about fabricated medical cures, election conspiracies, and even calls to harass local officials. It shook me. My uncle is a huge part of our family gatherings, and my dad’s best friend. I worry about the harm people could cause acting on these lies, but I also feel sick about breaking our family trust—I know if I said something publicly or reported him, it would explode Thanksgiving, possibly split our family, and devastate my dad. But if I stay quiet, am I complicit in real harm? Or is it even my place to intervene? I feel trapped—stuck between loving my family and feeling responsible as a citizen.
