I never expected my family group chat to become a battleground. Over the past few months, my uncle—who’s always been the funny, slightly eccentric one—started sharing posts online about a major political issue. At first it was just memes and opinion pieces, but recently it’s escalated into sharing debunked conspiracy theories and dangerous health misinformation. He’s gained quite a following among friends and extended relatives. Some of them even forward his posts in other groups, and I can tell the things he says are influencing people I care about. The thing is, I love my uncle. As a kid, he was the only adult who took my dreams seriously. But now, when I see his posts, I get angry and embarrassed, both for what he's saying and for how many people believe him. I’ve tried hinting gently in private, but he shrugs it off or just sends me articles "proving" his point. My parents say not to make waves, especially since our family has had some rough patches lately. But I worry that if I stay silent, I’m complicit in letting this stuff spread—people could seriously get hurt. On the other hand, if I publicly fact-check him, I know it’ll embarrass him in front of the family and probably cause a huge rift. Everyone hates drama, and I’m terrified of being cut off for "causing trouble." I even considered going to others in the family to ask for help, but what if that just makes it worse? I feel stuck—do I confront him openly, try to handle it quietly, or just stay out of it? What would YOU do?
