I’m really struggling with something that’s probably more common than I want to admit. My uncle, who’s always been the ‘funny, cool’ relative who comes to every holiday dinner, has been sharing extremely dangerous misinformation about public health policies and elections on his social media. It’s not just wild conspiracy theories—he’s got a lot of friends and followers, some of whom are clearly taking him seriously. I’ve tried talking to him privately, but he brushes me off or jokes that I’m ‘brainwashed by the mainstream.’ Every time he posts, it eats at me. I work with vulnerable people, and I know his words feed into real-world harm and division. My family is extremely tight-knit but politically divided. If I confront him publicly—commenting, correcting, or sharing credible information—I know it could spark a massive family rift, especially with relatives who agree with him. But staying silent feels like I’m complicit, somehow. I worry that if I ignore it, these falsehoods will keep spreading, unchecked. On the other hand, I’m not sure if calling him out will change anything—or if I’ll just lose someone I love over politics. I want to do what’s right, but I don’t know what that is anymore. Is it my job to step in online? Or should I protect the peace in my own family and hope, somehow, that the damage isn’t as bad as I fear? What would YOU do?
