Do I Ask My Friends Why They've Left Me Out?

Category: relationships • Theme: Self-Respect vs Fear of Rejection

I found out through a mutual friend’s social media that my longtime friend group has been meeting up without me for months. There were birthday dinners, weekend hikes—things I used to be invited to, and no one even mentioned them. I kept telling myself maybe it was random, but there are too many photos and stories for it to be a coincidence. I feel hurt, embarrassed, and angry, but mostly I’m confused. None of them have given any indication that something’s wrong, and whenever I message, they’re polite but distant, making vague excuses about being busy. I keep replaying every conversation in my head, trying to figure out when things changed or what I could have done to deserve this. The truth is, I miss them deeply, and seeing them together without me feels like a punch in the gut. It’s affected my confidence and made me question if I’m fundamentally unlikeable. Part of me wants to demand an explanation, but I’m terrified of making things even more awkward or being told outright that they don’t want me around. Another part wants to just let it go, but ignoring it feels like betraying myself and accepting that I’m invisible. I could try reaching out to just one person I felt closest to and asking gently, but even that feels risky. I honestly have no idea what kind of response I’d get, or if it’s better to protect myself and move on, or risk my pride to get closure that might hurt. What would YOU do?
