Do I Call for Help After My Friend’s Drunk Confession?

Category: relationships • Theme: Loyalty to a Friend vs Duty to Intervene

I never thought I’d be here, but my heart is pounding as I write this. Last weekend, my closest friend called me late at night, her words slurred and emotional. She finally admitted she’s been driving home drunk at least twice a week—she broke down crying, saying she can’t stop, that she’s terrified of what she might do, but she begged me not to tell anyone. I could practically hear the guilt bubbling up as she talked about nearly swerving onto the sidewalk once. Since then, I haven’t slept well. I wake up thinking of all the ways this could end badly—for her or for someone else. Still, she trusts me and made me swear I’d keep it between us. If I betray that, she’d probably never forgive me, and I could ruin her career and reputation, maybe even lose her as a friend forever. But if I let this go, I might be leaving the door open for something horrible to happen. I keep going over what I should actually do. Do I call her family, someone at work, or even the authorities? Do I just sit with her pain and hope she makes better choices, like she promised? Or is there a way in between, like staging some kind of intervention with other friends, even at the risk she’ll see it as a betrayal? I don’t see a neat answer where everyone’s okay. What would YOU do?
