I’m honestly at a total loss about what to do right now. My best friend started dating this guy about a month ago, and everyone thinks he’s charming. But here’s the thing: I used to work with him. I saw him manipulate coworkers, lie to cover his tracks, and on two separate occasions, he spread nasty rumors about people who got in his way. Nobody believed me when I tried to stand up to him at work, and eventually I quit just to get away from it. I haven’t told my friend any of this. She seems happier than I’ve seen her in years, finally out of her shell and having fun again. She keeps thanking me for supporting her new relationship, and I feel like such a fraud. Part of me desperately wants to warn her before she gets hurt. But another part of me remembers how isolated I felt when no one believed what he was capable of—and I worry that if I say anything, she’ll push me away, or think I’m jealous. I care about her so much, and I can’t stand the thought of her world crashing down. At the same time, I know I might be projecting my old feelings, and what if he’s changed? What if I’m just wrong? The stress is making me lose sleep. Should I risk our friendship to tell the truth as I see it, or keep my history out of it and let her make her own choices? What would YOU do?
