I never thought I’d find myself here. My best friend and I have been close for over a decade—practically sisters. When she started dating her current boyfriend a year ago, I was genuinely happy for her. The three of us hang out often, and over time, I started noticing things about him I admire: his humor, his kindness, the way he really listens. At first, I brushed my feelings aside as a harmless crush, but recently it’s become clear to me that it’s more than that. I think about him constantly. Sometimes, it seems like he feels something too—he finds excuses to message me, lingers in conversation, laughs a little too long at my jokes. But I can’t be sure I’m not just imagining it. The guilt eats at me. I haven’t acted on my feelings, but I catch myself hoping for messages from him or picturing us together. I’m terrified that if my friend ever found out, she’d feel betrayed, no matter how innocent my intentions. But hiding these feelings makes me feel like I’m lying to her. I could try to distance myself, but that risks damaging both friendships. Telling her would hurt her deeply, but maybe keeping this secret is just as harmful. I feel lost. I don’t know if there’s a right way to protect my friendship and be honest with myself. What would YOU do?
