I'm Falling for My Best Friend's Girlfriend—Should I Tell Him?

Category: relationships • Theme: Truthfulness vs Friendship Loyalty

I never wanted this to happen, but here I am: hopelessly in love with my best friend’s girlfriend. I’ve known my friend since high school; he’s like a brother to me. When he started dating her last year, I was happy for him. But the more we all hung out together, the more I started to notice things about her—how she really listens, her laugh, the way she looks at the world. I tried to ignore my feelings, telling myself it was just a stupid crush, but it’s only gotten stronger. Recently, we’ve shared a few lingering glances, and I swear there’s something between us, but I can’t be sure if it’s just my imagination. Now I feel crushed with guilt. If I ignore this, will it eat away at me—and possibly ruin our friendship if he finds out some other way? She hasn’t made a move, but I sense there’s some chemistry. Sometimes I wonder if I should just tell my friend, come clean, and deal with the consequences. Another part of me thinks I need to keep this to myself, distance myself, and let things pass. But that means lying to him, and maybe missing out on something real. Every time I see them together, it hurts, but the thought of acting on my feelings—and hurting my best friend—tears me up inside. I’m scared I’ll lose him, or her, or both. What would YOU do?
