I always believed there were no secrets between me and my closest friend—we've been inseparable since college. But last weekend, during a random chat with a mutual friend, I discovered she’s known for years that my ex had cheated on me. Back then, she convinced me to break up by hinting that my ex “didn’t value me,” but never told me explicitly why. I had spent years wondering what went wrong, blaming myself, and feeling like I couldn’t trust my own judgment in relationships. When I confronted her, she cried and said she kept it from me out of love, that I was already struggling with depression at the time and she knew the truth would “shatter” me. Now I feel betrayed—like I was protected but also kept in the dark, and it hurts to think my closest friend chose for me what I could or couldn’t handle. But I also remember how low I was then, and I know she’s always had my best interests at heart. Part of me wants to cut her off, another part aches to understand and forgive, and a third voice says maybe I need distance to process. I keep replaying everything and have no idea how to move forward. What would YOU do?
